For over 25 years, the Puppy Raisers of the University of Delaware (PRoUD) raisers have lived with the Seeing Eye puppies they are raising in approved on-campus housing. The student volunteers bring them to classes, attend bi-monthly meetings, and participate in exposure outings that prepare the puppies for their future jobs as guides.
Being a part of the puppy raising community on campus made an impact on recent UD graduate, Lillian Weingarten, never expected.
Dear The Seeing Eye,
Four years ago, I joined the Puppy Raisers of UD not realizing how much The Seeing Eye would end up shaping my college experience.
Since then, I’ve had the privilege of raising Zia, Rae, Addy, and now Frances. Each pup has made such a huge impact on my life and being part of their journey toward becoming Seeing Eye dogs has been one of the most rewarding parts of college for me.
Through PRoUD, I had the opportunity to serve on fundraising committee, as secretary, and ultimately as president. I also helped plan exposure outings and events and got to be part of such an incredible community that cares so deeply about The Seeing Eye’s mission. From puppy classes and late night walks to trips to Philly and DC, these experiences gave me some of my favorite memories and friendships.
I’m so grateful to The Seeing Eye, our area coordinators, puppy sitters, fellow raisers, and everyone who supported me and my pups along the way. I’ll always be thankful for everything these four years, and these four pups, have given me 🐾💚–Lillian
