Pilot Program Combines Benefits of AI Tech with Enhanced Independence of Guide Dog Mobility

Morristown, N.J. – The Seeing Eye announced today the launch of a new program to teach the use of AI-powered Meta smart glasses as part of its training program for Seeing Eye teams.
The initiative will provide handlers with training and guidance on the safe and effective use of the wearable technology alongside their Seeing Eye dogs, supporting the critical partnership between handler and dog.

AI-powered smart glasses are increasingly used by people who are blind or low vision to access information hands-free through voice commands, camera-based features, and mobile app integrations. While the technology shows tremendous promise, it must be used carefully when traveling with a guide dog to avoid disrupting communication and trust between the handler and the dog.
Instruction will be provided in a tiered, safety-first training pathway through online learning, regional workshops, and integration with its monthly classes for new Seeing Eye teams starting in September 2026. The Seeing Eye aims to ensure that this innovation enhances, rather than complicates, the mobility and safety of Seeing Eye® teams.
The initiative’s pilot year has been generously funded by grants from a Seeing Eye graduate and the ADP Foundation.
Established in 1929, The Seeing Eye provides specially bred and trained dogs to guide people who are blind or low vision. Seeing Eye dog handlers experience greatly enhanced mobility and independence, allowing them to retain their active lifestyles. The Seeing Eye is a 501(c)3 non-profit supported by contributions from individuals, corporations and foundations, bequests, and other planned gifts. The Seeing Eye does not receive government or insurance funding.
