No, this is an optional addition to the class curriculum. Students must apply for the Meta program at least 2 months prior to starting class, complete pre-class online learning, and demonstrate proficiency through a Tech Juno Walk upon arrival in class to proceed with the Meta training during class.

Safety is of paramount importance, and our tiered program is designed to support orientation and information gathering without competing with core guide dog communication and safety skills.

The training and curriculum was created by the instruction and training team based on workshops with graduates, testing, and observations with active Seeing Eye teams that began in the fall of 2025. Through the support of a generous donor, we are able to offer free pairs of glasses to 250 students and active graduates during the pilot period.

Prior to class, students should be accustomed to wearing their Meta glasses for at least one hour at a time, be able to independently initiate 5 to 7 core voice commands, use hands-free volunteer support, ask effective prompts such as signs, doors, and intersection descriptions, and differentiate navigation support from information support.

Those who do not demonstrate adequate proficiency in the use of Meta glasses would continue in class but would not be able to use their Meta glasses to assist with navigation during class.

Yes, as long as they are Meta glasses and the proficiency requirements are met.

At this time, we are working with Gen 2 models, however, the online learning and class instruction is still compatible with Gen 1 models.

Once the online learning module has been completed, virtual coaching with a Seeing Eye instructor will be available to address specific integration hurdles.

There are subscription-based apps and free apps that complement the use of Meta glasses. It is up to each individual to select the apps that work best for them.

Our program covers the base cost of a pair of Ray Bans Gen 2 Meta glasses, any additional costs associated with upgrades would be the responsibility of the individual.

The Seeing Eye will reassess the program, its curriculum, and graduate interest to determine the best way to improve or continue offering Meta glasses and training to incoming students and active graduates.
