50 Years of Puppy Raising: The Ocean County Puppy Club

Over 50 years ago, Christine Higham’s family received their first puppy, a German shepherd named Lola. Today, Christine is The Seeing Eye’s Linda Feinne Roth Manager of Puppy Development.

“The program allowed the entire family to be involved and taught me at a very young age responsibility, not only to care for a puppy, but also a way to give back to the community,” explained Christine.

With more families in the area beginning to raise, Christine’s mother saw the need to create the Ocean County Seeing Eye 4-H Club in 1975.

“Over the years, the club members became a second family. My mom strove for a welcoming atmosphere, and the club continues to be a supportive community assisting each other as needed and celebrating together the accomplishments of the puppies on their journey to become a Seeing Eye dog.”

Twenty members of the Ocean County puppy raising club pose together at Swing Time Mini-Golf with the eleven puppies they are raising, which include a chocolate Lab, two yellow Labs, two black Labs, a golden retriever, and five German shepherds.

Fellow club members expressed the same sentiments!

“Being part of such an incredible program as The Seeing Eye feels amazing, and the sense of community within the puppy raisers’ club has been such a gift—I’ve met some of my best friends through it. Plus, the outings with the dogs and like-minded people are not only meaningful but also so much fun.” -Milena Cunningham

“I love raising puppies for The Seeing Eye because it gives our family the chance to be part of something bigger than ourselves. Some of our favorite moments are taking the dogs on trips with our club, such as walking through New York City, strolling the Point Pleasant boardwalk, or even mini golfing.” – Raymond Desfosse

“The Ocean County club is very active. A lot of members, a lot of puppies, and a lot of outings. A lot of support for the puppy raisers, and that means a lot when you’re a first-time raiser. I have learned so much about raising a pup since joining the club in 2019.” – Anna Meola

“The Ocean County 4-H club has some of the best members who create a strong community and are welcoming to all. My family is forever grateful to have been a part of such a spectacular group, and we look forward to watching it grow even stronger.” -Kacey England

“I couldn’t ask for a better support system to help me raise my dogs than the members and leaders of the Ocean County club. “ -Caroline Luckhowec
