Dr. Michael H. Mittelman, the president of Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences, began his career as a Navy optometrist following his 1980 graduation from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry. Dr. Mittelman served for more than three decades in the U.S. Navy, rising to the rank of Rear Admiral (Upper Half) and Deputy Surgeon General of the Navy. Key leadership positions held include Command Surgeon for U.S. Joint Forces Command and U.S. Pacific Command Surgeon. His global experience includes directing the Department of Defense’s medical response to the 2011 Fukushima disaster.
Originally from Long Beach in Nassau County, New York, in addition to his Doctor of Optometry, he has earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Jacksonville University, a Master of Public Health degree (MPH) from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and a Master of Business Administration from the Fox School of Business at Temple University. He graduated from the Naval War College non-resident program in 1991.
