With the summer approaching, 4th of July celebrations will be quickly upon us. Each year, reports of lost or missing pets increase immediately following fireworks displays. Follow these 5 tips to ensure your whole furry family remains safe, happy and healthy. (These tips can also be applied to cats!)
- Microchip your dog and make sure the microchip is registered. It is recommended to check your profile with the microchip registry annually to ensure your contact information is up to date.
- Never bring your dog to a fireworks display. This is a frightening situation and even the most outgoing and confident dogs will be startled.
- If you can, keep your dog inside after sundown. This may mean you’ll have to get up early the next morning to give your dog a bathroom break. If your pet must go outside, go with them and walk them on a leash.
- Make sure your home and property are secure. Animals who are fearful can push through doors, windows, gates, and climb or dig under fences in search of safety away from the loud noise.
- Give your dog a safe place to rest. If your dog is comfortable in a crate, this is the best place for him or her to be. You can also close them into a small, comfortable room like a bathroom where they will feel like they are in a den. You can play music or white noise to help calm them.
