Biking 460 miles with nearly 20,000 feet of ascent from Boston, MA, to Calais, ME, is no easy feat, but doing it for a good cause makes the trek worthwhile.
Puppy Ride Long Island was spurred into existence when Jim Freiss wanted a way to honor his brother, John Freiss’ legacy. Over the past six years, the event has grown and dedicated itself to raising money for The Seeing Eye, where John received his guide dog, Hero. This year alone, Puppy Ride Long Island has raised $84,000.
Jim wasn’t alone tackling the hilliest route since the event’s inception. Five endurance athlete friends and dedicated support drivers, who helped ensure the group was safe and fed throughout the weeklong journey, joined Jim.
There was a lot to see along the ride, which consisted of traveling on roadways, as well as paved and unpaved trails. The riders took time to visit and spread the word about The Seeing Eye to many local businesses, including many of the ice cream shops in Maine!
On the eighth day of the ride, The Blue Point Brewery, one of Puppy Ride Long Island’s sponsors, held a reception. Friends, family, and Seeing Eye puppy raisers were there to celebrate the successful journey.
We are so thankful to all those who have supported Puppy Ride Long Island this year and in years past. We are incredibly grateful to Jim and all his fellow riders who continue to raise awareness for the important work done at The Seeing Eye.
