Nearly one week since the landfall of Superstorm Sandy, The Seeing Eye's power has been restored after running on emergency generator power. Our breeding station in Chester however, continues to run on its generators. We want to let you know that all of our students currently in class are safe, sound, and are able to train with their new Seeing Eye® dogs despite the enormous challenges we continue to face throughout New Jersey, New York and the entire northeastern seaboard.
This is in large part due to the dedicated Seeing Eye staff who jumped into emergency mode including our instructors, kennel workers, facilities staff and dining-room staff, many of whom are also faced with their own extreme situations at home. Many of us are still without electricity, gas lines are long (where there is gas), and unthinkably, some of those in our communities have lost or experienced severe damage to their homes from fallen trees, wind damage or devastating floods or fire. Those who are able to work do, and we remain committed to the needs of those we serve.
Our dogs both on campus and at the breeding station have all been well taken care of throughout, and even two healthy litters of puppies were born last week. This is not only a testament to our amazing staff but is also possible due to an extremely generous donation eight years ago from an anonymous donor who gave us generators to keep us going in an emergency. These industrial strength generators allowed us to survive the storm the way we did. We are eternally grateful for their generosity.
Please know that we continue to be here for our students no matter what. We are able to do this thanks to your continued financial support and belief in the important life-changing work we do. Obviously dealing with a storm of this magnitude still brings with it increased and unanticipated expenses. Please consider giving generously today to help us continue our mission. In this time of extreme stress and uncertainty, our hopes and prayers go out to anyone who has been impacted by this unprecedented storm.
